Belize Vector and Ecology Center (BVEC) Research Associate

Mariely Campos lives in San Narciso Village, Corozal District. Since she was a little girl, she has been avid to venture into the realm of science. She attended San Narciso R.C school and continued her education at Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico Highschool and graduated as a science major. She was a volunteer at the Butterfly Sanctuary of her high school and also in an organization known as FOCUS which primarily dealt with mangroves sustainability. In 2017 she attended Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College and graduated with honors with an Associate’s Degree in Biology and Natural Resources. She had the opportunity to perform several coral, seagrass and fish diversity surveys in Half Moon Caye, Bacalar Chico and even got the chance to explore the Blue Hole. Mariely had made the decision to become a Marine biologist based on the remarkable experiences from her associate’s years, but the world had other intentions. She debated which direction to choose before settling on biology. In 2019 she was accepted at the University of Belize and in 2021 at the age of 20, she graduated with honors from the university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. Her passion is to research fungi, plant and vector diseases. She relishes exploring every nook and cranny of biology. She spends her free time reading Nicholas Sparks novels and working on her collection of cacti and succulents. In April 2022 she became a volunteer at BVEC, she believes that learning from others is one of the world’s greatest blessings. Now as part of the BVEC family, she is jubilant to explore and become well versed in the vector and ecological problems faced by her nation and help to work towards solutions.
